Growing up in Guatemala, going to the market wasn't just an errand—it was a full-sensory event. I used to go with my mom and sister to grab the weekly produce, hunt down craft supplies for family parties, or pick out fresh flowers. Outside, I’d spend time feeding the plaza pigeons (who were always ready for a free snack).

Now that I live in France, every trip back to Guatemala comes with a mission: stock up on as many tiny pieces of home as humanly possible to drag back across the ocean. Packing my bags is basically an exercise in fitting an entire Guatemalan market into a suitcase! It’s a sweet reminder of what it’s like to have two homes—the vibrant country where my roots are, and the one where I live today.

One of my favorite things is watching my own kids experience the exact same magic when they go to the market with my dad. During a recent Christmas trip, a vendor randomly gifted my kids a towel just because. Honestly, market vendors are the kindest, most generous, and most loyal people on Earth (and they will always make sure you don't leave empty-handed!).

Retazos del Mercado (Bits & Pieces of the Market) was born from all those chaotic, tender, and funny little memories. Each of the seven patterns captures a slice of that market life—from precision backstrap weaving and flower-strewn walkways to overflowing produce baskets and giant, wobbly towers of woven caña. It’s a heartfelt tribute to family, roots, and the unmistakable spirit of Guatemalan market life!
